We learned the results of the PET scan today. The scan showed the cancer is progressing and is now located in both breasts and lymph nodes under both arms. Because of the cancer’s progression despite chemotherapy and Herceptin, effective today the doctor discontinued Herceptin. She wants Karen to try a new drug called Tykerb also known as Lapatanib. It just recently gained FDA approval for use in last stage cancer treatment. They are working on getting Karen the medication which is so new it has several logistical (insurance coverage, etc…) issues to be worked out before she can begin taking it.
Another concern with the cancers progression is where it moves to in the body. As many of you know the type of breast cancer Karen has is HER2/neu (HER2) positive. This type of cancer commonly metastasizes to the brain. The PET scan does not cover the head so Karen is scheduled for a MRI of the brain on Friday, 1 June to determine if there is any cancer present there. The good news is there were no signs of cancer in her lungs.
Obviously, this news is very discouraging but our hope remains unchanged. God is still in control and can, if He chooses, completely heal Karen here on earth. Our trust is not in the medication or the doctors.
Thank you for checking in on Karen and most of all for your prayers. Please pray for complete healing of the cancer from Karen’s body, for wisdom and discernment as she looks at all the “options”, and for rest and peace that passes understanding as we continue this journey.

I have been following your blog for quite awhile now. I wanted to know that you continue to be in my prayers. We are a homeschooling family in SW Colorado. Do you have an address that I can send a card to Karen at? I would love to send her one.
Karen and family, you are very much in our thoughts and prayers. May you wake up to His new mercies each morning, and lie down and sleep in peace each night (Lam 3:23, Psalm 4:8). Our love to you all.
