This week we’ve seen Karen’s energy levels continue to improve. She finished round four of chemo and is looking forward to a week off. She is experiencing fewer effects from the chemo. The newest challenge is thin splitting nails which have caused very painful sores on her toes. Please pray that this upcoming week free of chemo brings healing to her nails and toes.
Today, 22 September, Karen received round 6 of Herceptin by infusion. While at the doctor’s office we had the pleasure of seeing Elizabeth, another patient with breast cancer. In the area of cancer survival she is a local living legend. More than nine years ago she was told the breast cancer she beat some five years earlier had returned and this time metastasized to her brain, liver, lungs and bones. She began participating in a study of an experimental drug. Thanks to her and the many other women who participated in the study, the drug has now been approved for use in treatment of late stage cancer. The name of the drug is Herceptin and today marked Elizabeth’s 403rd dose! She is a delightful woman who is very thankful for the time she has enjoyed with her family and friends, well beyond what the doctor’s expected. Praise God for the wisdom He has granted doctors in the creation of different drugs to fight cancer.
MORE GREAT NEWS!!! Karen’s liver function continues to improve. There are three enzymes that are tracked and measured to determine liver function. Two out of three have dropped to within the normal range. Let me say that again, 2 out of 3 are now showing NORMAL!!! She still has measurable tumors in her liver and breast, but her liver returning to normal function is an answer to our prayers!
Additional prayer requests: Please pray that the cancer in Karen’s body will be completely destroyed with no lasting affects on her body.

Dear Karen -
Leslie just shared this web address with me today and I've been pouring over the entries of your summer for a while tonight. You and your precious family (which I'm so glad to see in the picture!) have been in my prayers for weeks and weeks. Months ago I asked our home schooling co-op to pray for you as well and so you've had other people holding you up before the throne. Never meeting each other doesn't seem to matter in the family of Jesus, does it? A sister is a sister -- a brother is a brother. Which state we live in doesn't matter a bit!
I'm so glad to read of how much you've improved and how God has not only sustained your health, but has clearly sustained your faith as well.
Know that you and yours are loved.
We are all well here -- Megan is in college (a junior!). I can hardly beleive it. She's in school in Greenville, SC at North Greenville College. Haley (15), Kelsey (13) and Joseph (11) are all doing really well in their school. (they all attend the same small K-12 school near our home). And Ruth (7) is still taught at home. Tague is weathering the Northwest Airlines bankruptcy.... we'll see how it goes.
I'm very content with my stay-at-home-mom job and am blessed to mother this brood!
I won't keep you.... just want you to know that I'm happy for how well you are doing and will continue to pray for you, for your dear husband, for your precious children, and for your whole extended family as you face cancer together in the sustaining grace of Jesus.
